Our Background
Striving For Independence, SFI was established in 1994 by Dorothy Pinnock, as an independent organisation committed to care in the community.
In 1994, Striving For Independence SFI, opened its first private residential care home for adults with learning disabilities in College Road, Wembley, as an alternative to large institutional care for adults with learning difficulties. Mrs. Pinnock used her own knowledge and experience gained as a residential social worker caring for the elderly and adults and children with learning disabilities with the London Borough of Brent to open her own residential care home. It is both through her personal experience and her working in a large institution that inspired her to start up SFI Care Homes, as she became convinced of the need to find a better alternative to long term hospital care.
The SFI Care Homes took great pride in initially providing a range of care services designed to meet the needs of young adults with severe learning disabilities. The name ‘Striving for Independence’, is based on the concept that people regardless of their disability strive to be acknowledged and communicate to others that, “I am an equal and deserve the right to be treated as a normal person.”
Striving For Independence SFI, has residential care homes operating in North West London specialising in Residential Care and Respite Care Services. Striving For Independence SFI, also has a Supported Living Unit for people with learning disabilities and mental health issues.
SFI Care Solutions is a viable addition to Striving For Independence, it has expanded the vision and services by providing home based services for a variety of new service users within our community, including: elderly people; people who have learning disabilities; people who have physical disabilities; or people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness.
SFI Care Solutions has taken on board the project to increase the Day Care Services offered by the Striving For Independence SFI, with the re-launch of an Activity Centre and an Out Reach Programme which at present currently caters for young adults with learning disabilities.
